Super Trip, June 18-29
The first two days of Supertrip were spent flying and picking up most of our gear including vans, food, and basic camping gear for a few scouts whose packs were left in Seattle due to logistic errors from our airline. Our first day of action was day three when we explored the Icelandic Scout Camp Úlfljótsvatn, the famous Blue Lagoon, and became acquainted with the Icelandic mosquitos: midges. We camped overnight in the scout camp where they had archery, rock climbing, and obstacle course facilities. On the morning of the fourth day we took a bus to a whitewater rafting company where we were fitted with wet suits, warm layers, and splash jackets. We took a post-apocalyptic monster truck bus to the boat launch where we were introduced to our guides and river before hopping into our rafts. Once back at the rafting base, we were given time to soak and relax in hot tubs and steam rooms. Once we were all relaxed and refurbished, we returned to the scout camp for dinner and sleep. On day five we took a trip to hike and bathe in some hot springs. The hike was very scenic and well worth the hour hike. After the hot springs we took a small horseback expedition around the Icelandic countryside. The horses were both friendly and well-behaved, the crew became enthusiastic about doing more riding in the states.
For day six we took a kayaking excursion around the lake by the side of the scout camp. We boated to the nearby church and small islands, exploring the natural beauty of Iceland and playing boating inspired games. This was our last night in the scout camp before departing to our next campsite in Vik. This was a popular campsite of the crew as we were given plenty of time to explore the nearby hills, waterfalls, and flower fields. They enjoyed the pretty views and photography opportunities.
On day seven we visited the black sand beaches, toured ice caves, and visited the famous Yoda caves which had a distinctive Yoda shape at the entrance. Since the ice caves showed the insides of the icelandic glaciers, we appropriately took a guided hike on top of the glaciers for day eight. On day nine we visited the Vok baths where we cleaned off and took several cold plunges (repeatedly jumping from the hot baths into the cold river) before starting our long drive to our next campsite. While on our long drive, we visited a small cove that a seemingly infinite number of puffins called home. The crew was thoroughly satisfied and wished they could spend the whole day watching them. Unfortunately, the crew had to move on to their next site in Akureyri. Day ten started with a long drive broken up with an amazing photo op at and around a large gorge and eventually Iceland’s very own museum of witchcraft and sorcery. For dinner, we tried Iceland’s gas station burgers at the nearby N1 store. Back at camp, the crew enjoyed playing and inventing a new game, freak ball, inside a nearby gaga ball pit.
The majority of day 11 was handed to the crew for small group exploration of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. Some points of interest included the rainbow road, Bæjarins Beztu hot dog stand, various thrift stores, and Hallgrimskirkja. The crew had a lot of fun thrifting, souvenir shopping, and eating out. This was our last full day in Iceland which meant this was the last opportunity for souvenir shopping and our crew sponsored ice cream tradition. Our dinner at the Bæjarins Beztu hot dog stand left crew members wanting more. Some members of the crew stayed up to catch the Icelandic sunset, which we had not seen during our previous ten night’s stay. For our final day, we visited a troll cave and viking museum in Keflavik before dropping off all our rental vans and boarding our plane home. Although our layover was brief and stressful, we managed to get everyone and our gear through security, customs, and onto our plane back home. We landed safely in SFO at 11:30 PM, just in time to stay on day 12. The crew was welcomed by their families and said their final farewells before departing for home.

Garage Sale Fundraiser, May 10 2025
The crew worked hard to set up a garage sale at the Congregational Church of the Peninsula. There was a variety of the items being sold contributed by members of the crew such with some of the most notable being a kayak, a drone, and popcorn popper. To prepare, the crew created artistic signs to grab the attention of passing drivers, with some of us even going down to the intersection at Ralston Avenue to hold up our signs and advertise our sale. We also made delicious lemonade to offer to anyone who would look at our sale. After the sale, we went to Coyote Cafe to have lunch before leaving. All in all, it was a successful sale that helped gain funding for this year’s supertrip to Iceland.

Church Work Day, May 3 2025
On May 3rd, 2025, Troop 27 and Crew 27 gave back to the community by helping clean our supporting organization, the Congregational Church of the Peninsula. Scouts went around the church making it look nicer to everyone by weeding the plants, laying down mulch, cleaning tables, and more. The service lasted from about 10:00 am until 3:00 pm with lunch for the hard working scouts around noon. After the service some representatives of the church gave their words of appreciation to the scouts and scouts were proud of the work they accomplished.

Camporee, April 26-28 2025
This year for Camporee, Venture Crew had 10-12 participants, as opposed to our 5 last year. We started out the outing by leaving CCP on Friday night, to head out to Boulder Creek. We got there, set up, and got ready for competitions the next day. During the day on Saturday, there were many cool and intriguing events and activities being held around camp. For example, we had archery, native american style traps, tomahawk throwing, plant identification practice, and more. After all our events on Saturday, we went back to camp and made a dinner of chicken alfredo (we put too much salt on the chicken by accident). Then, we attended a campfire with skits and songs with the other troops that were there. On Sunday morning, we got up, made breakfast, and went to the morning flag ceremony. After the flags, we all stayed in the area, and started the awards, where all the event runners awarded people with ribbons for getting top three in their events. Since the venture crew has mainly older people, we were in the senior division, meaning there were only 5 patrols to compete against. Our two crew patrols ended up getting first and second overall for our division. After the awards, we went back to camp, made sure everything was packed up, and started a service project before leaving camp. We did trail maintenance, clearing tree overhangs from trails, lopping branches coming in from the side, and just generally making the trails more visible and safe. After that service project, we all went back to CCP to enjoy the rest of our weekend.

Treasure Hunt, Mar. 22 2025
On March 22, 2025, after months of careful planning, Venture Crew 27 had the wonderful opportunity to lead our troop on an exciting time travel adventure. The scouts participated in a variety of fun activities, including orienteering to find pieces of their time machine, helping to rescue people from the Titanic, and bringing fire to early humans, among others. That evening, we celebrated at Hudart Park with a campfire, handing out candies and sodas while dressed in our best outfits.
The next day, Venture Crew enjoyed a game called Fox Hunt, where we practiced using our HAM radios to locate signals. We wrapped up an amazing weekend full of teamwork and fun, before heading home.

Scout Sunday and Pancake Breakfast, Feb 9, 2025
Crew 27 and Troop 27 held their annual community outreach Pancake Breakfast and Scout Sunday at Congregational Church of the Peninsula (CCP). We all worked together to greet and welcome people, along with making a delicious breakfast for the local community. Our fantastic chefs made delicious pancakes, sausage, and potatoes. After the Pancake breakfast, we had our Scout Sunday church service with the community. During the service, a few scouts spoke of the many fun even and community programs we do, and talked about past events. We sang songs, including a couple scouts that did a duet, and discussed key important history topics. We had a fun time with CCP and giving back to the community.

Ski Outing, Jan 26 2025
We left the church on Friday, and drove up to Tahoe. We got stuck in traffic and ended up getting to the Whacker’s cabin at around 10:30. The heater was turned up a lot so we were all sweating in our sleeping bags. The next morning we got up, cooked breakfast, packed lunches, and drove to Donner for a fun day of skiing. There were no major injuries. We ate lunch in the lodge, then hit the slopes for a little longer before driving back to the Whacker’s cabin. For dinner, we went to a fancy pizza place and ate 2000 calories worth of pizza. After dinner, we watched pirated Wicked on Zack’s computer then went to bed. On day two, we drove back to Donner for another day of skiing. There was a cartwheel into a tree and unintended airtime, but despite this nobody was seriously injured. After lunch at the lodge and a final few runs, we returned to the Whacker cabin to pack up, and then drove back to San Mateo.

New Years Party Dec 31 2024 – Jan 1 2025
The night started out with an exploration of the premises. The house the party was hosted at was absolutely breathtaking, and a unique architectural design left many in awe. A large swing in the yard was a significant feature earlier in the evening. Later, we migrated inside to enjoy some of the snacks and food others had brought and held a Super Smash Bros tournament in the large central room of the house. Later, a hide-and-seek game utilized the large yard space, which went on for quite a while, with some pretty odd hiding spots being hard to find, such as a drain culvert. A major point of interest was the arcade/bar area, where we partook in (non-alcoholic) sodas and juices while playing retro arcade games and pool. A brief recess from activities was taken to celebrate the turning of the clocks to 2025, where with numerous “bang snaps”, noisemakers, and party horns, we made enough noise to declare that it was, indeed, 2025. The rest of the night was dedicated to an iron chef competition where three teams competed to make the best food with limited ingredients and a time constraint. The competition ended up going late into the night, and many people fell asleep before it concluded. Overall, the party was great, with many activities and an interesting setting.

Caroling for Senior Center, Saturday Dec 21 2025
On Saturday December 21st, Venture Crew 27 continued their annual tradition of caroling at the Sunrise Senior Living center. We had a lot of crew members show up to sing for the people living in the senior center. We sang many different songs and the audience really enjoyed it and some even sang along with us. Sunrise Senior Living was very happy and appreciated us coming out and caroling to brighten the residents holiday season.

Shooting Outing, Dec 14 2024
The Crew had an exciting day of shotgun shooting, each firing fifty rounds at flat targets with either a 12 or 20-gauge shotgun. Some scouts received individual instruction, while others practiced on their own. The day included various shooting stations where everyone took turns aiming at the flying clays and the rolling rabbits. The outing fostered camaraderie as scouts cheered each other on, celebrating both hits and misses. It was a fun and memorable experience for the Crew, and everyone tested their skills and enjoyed the fun challenge.

Scouting for Food/Mt. Madonna, Nov 16 – Nov 17 2024
On the weekend of November 16th and 17th, we joined our troop, troop 27, in Scouting for Food. In this program, we walk around the neighborhood asking residents if they have any non-perishable food items they want to donate to us, to be handed off to the Good Samaritan House. We started our canvassing around 8:45, and walked neighborhoods until about 12:30. By this point, we had filled a minivan full of donated food twice!
When we all got back to Marlin Park, we were treated to a nice lunch of hamburgers or hot dogs, followed by a Cub Scout recruiting event. For this portion of our day, the venture crew paired up with Cubs to get on a catamaran canoe, which is two canoes lashed together. The cubs got to paddle around and participate in a kind of treasure hunt on the water.
After this event, which all the Cub Scouts loved, the crew gathered up and piled in the vehicles for the drive to Mt. Madonna. When we got there, it was already dark, and we immediately started working on our dinner of beef bourguignon. This was followed by apple crumble for dessert, and a short campfire. The following morning, we got up late (7:45) and got to work on our breakfast: Mountain Man (a dutch oven recipe with egg, sausage, cheese, and hash browns). Next, we went on a short 3-mile loop hike, returned to camp, and made foil packets with salmon for lunch. Lastly, we packed up all our gear, cleaned up the campsite, and returned back to CCP.
