Our first day of action was day three when we explored the Icelandic Scout Camp Úlfljótsvatn, the famous Blue Lagoon, and became acquainted with the Icelandic mosquitos: midges. We camped overnight in the scout camp where they had archery, rock climbing, and obstacle course facilities. On the morning of the fourth day we took a bus to a whitewater rafting company where we were fitted with wet suits, warm layers, and splash jackets. We took a post-apocalyptic monster truck bus to the boat launch where we were introduced to our guides and river before hopping into our rafts. Once back at the rafting base, we were given time to soak and relax in hot tubs and steam rooms. Once we were all relaxed and refurbished, we returned to the scout camp for dinner and sleep. On day five we took a trip to hike and bathe in some hot springs. The hike was very scenic and well worth the hour hike. After the hot springs we took a small horseback expedition around the Icelandic countryside. The horses were both friendly and well-behaved, the crew became enthusiastic about doing more riding in the states.

For day six we took a kayaking excursion around the lake by the side of the scout camp. We boated to the nearby church and small islands, exploring the natural beauty of Iceland and playing boating inspired games. This was our last night in the scout camp before departing to our next campsite in Vik. This was a popular campsite of the crew as we were given plenty of time to explore the nearby hills, waterfalls, and flower fields. They enjoyed the pretty views and photography opportunities.

On day seven we visited the black sand beaches, toured ice caves, and visited the famous Yoda caves which had a distinctive Yoda shape at the entrance. Since the ice caves showed the insides of the icelandic glaciers, we appropriately took a guided hike on top of the glaciers for day eight. On day nine we visited the Vok baths where we cleaned off and took several cold plunges (repeatedly jumping from the hot baths into the cold river) before starting our long drive to our next campsite. While on our long drive, we visited a small cove that a seemingly infinite number of puffins called home. The crew was thoroughly satisfied and wished they could spend the whole day watching them. Unfortunately, the crew had to move on to their next site in Akureyri. Day ten started with a long drive broken up with an amazing photo op at and around a large gorge and eventually Iceland’s very own museum of witchcraft and sorcery. For dinner, we tried Iceland’s gas station burgers at the nearby N1 store. Back at camp, the crew enjoyed playing and inventing a new game, freak ball, inside a nearby gaga ball pit.

The majority of day 11 was handed to the crew for small group exploration of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. Some points of interest included the rainbow road, Bæjarins Beztu hot dog stand, various thrift stores, and Hallgrimskirkja. The crew had a lot of fun thrifting, souvenir shopping, and eating out. This was our last full day in Iceland which meant this was the last opportunity for souvenir shopping and our crew sponsored ice cream tradition. Our dinner at the Bæjarins Beztu hot dog stand left crew members wanting more. Some members of the crew stayed up to catch the Icelandic sunset, which we had not seen during our previous ten night’s stay. For our final day, we visited a troll cave and viking museum in Keflavik before dropping off all our rental vans and boarding our plane home. Although our layover was brief and stressful, we managed to get everyone and our gear through security, customs, and onto our plane back home. We landed safely in SFO at 11:30 PM, just in time to stay on day 12. The crew was welcomed by their families and said their final farewells before departing for home.

By Dominic W

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

The first two days of Supertrip were spent flying and picking up most of our gear including vans, food, and basic camping gear for a few scouts whose packs were […]

[1
["post-6625","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
